Liquid Facelift

By: Dr. Michael Pasquale

A liquid facelift is a funny term, as it is not really a facelift at all. This is a marketing term which is used to sell multiple non surgical procedures, such as injecting Botulinum toxin and various fillers to make a face look younger. It does work well when done correctly, even if it is only temporary.

Does the liquid facelift work?

Liquid facelifts can be very effective. In fact these procedures work rather well as far as non surgical procedures are concerned. In some cases it can make a person look 5 years younger or in very rare cases even younger. This may require almost the same cost as a mini surgical facelift however. It’s very important to understand that these procedures require sophistication and complete understanding of the tools and what is possible.

How is a liquid or nonsurgical facelift performed?

The combination of these fillers, botulism toxins and other various products can fill in the wrinkles or eliminate some of the dynamic wrinkles. The dynamic wrinkles are those caused by motion of the muscles, thus the paralytics like Botulinum Toxin, Dysport or Xeomin will do that when injected. The fillers ranging from Juvéderm, Restylane, Sculptra and Radiesse are used to fill in various facial areas.

Two things happen with the fillers which must be used in certain areas and not others depending on which one and the effect your trying to receive. First is the direct filler effect, that is filling in a depression like under the eyes. This direct effect can be seen where the dent is no longer noticeable. The second more important effect is what happens with reflective light. When the area of the “dent or wrinkle” is filled in light reflects differently. This gives the person a “glow of youth”.

Who is qualified to do a liquid or nonsurgical facelift?

Every doctor is now a cosmetic surgeon! Well not really, but it seems more and more doctors are getting into the act for financial rewards since the insurance industry is paying doctors such a low fee these days. This “liquid facelift” may be done much more safely than a traditional face lift. Yet the problem is when a doctor is not a surgeon they may only give you the option of a non surgical lifting procedure. This may not be in your best interest and may not obtain the results you desire.

Does a liquid facelift cost less than surgery?

Surgery in the long run may actually save you money and time. A liquid or nonsurgical facelift must be repeated every so often in order to retain it’s effects. That can end up increasing the cost and time spent by a lot over the years. It’s very difficult to determine if non surgical or surgical is better without an examination and consultation by a plastic surgeon.

Does a liquid facelift last long?

Fillers and injectables eventually are absorbed by the body and their cumulative effect is finally lost. This is true for Restylane, Botulinum Toxin, Radiesse, Dysport etc. Depending on the type of injectables that are being used, the liquid facelift can last from 4-8 months.

In a comprehensive beauty clinic like the Infinity Life Center, we have non surgical and surgical plastic surgeons who are fully trained. We can offer you a complete package of choices that covers the entire spectrum from skin care / dermatology to non surgical to surgical options. This isn’t true with the family doctor or spa that administers Botulinum Toxin and had a weekend course.

We by no means push everyone towards surgery. There are risks and we want to give everyone the most optimum treatment plan and options available. We perform non-surgical procedures daily and they are a wonderful tool to have at our disposal, though it doesn’t mean that it is right for everyone. It all depends on the results you want, what is realistic and many factors that only a fully trained, experienced plastic surgeon can perceive and address.
